The Universal Health Aid Organization started as a response to the absence of preventive health care for the considerable uninsured and under-insured population within the United States. The lack of preventive medicine in the United States has led to health issues including diabetes, high-blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. The US education system has failed to address these issues effectively both in schools and in communities at large. Universal Health Aid recognizes that regular medical checkups, health education, and improved lifestyles can play a large part in improving the overall well-being of the community. The overall mission is to address these concerns to improve the overall health conditions of present and future generations.

The organization’s goals include providing free preventive health screenings for the uninsured and under-insured, organizing health education initiatives, offering medical services in under-served regions, increasing awareness about declining health conditions within the United States, and building a new generation of community oriented young leaders to continue these programs in the future.

As of 2019, Universal Health Aid is operating five chapters in Gary, Indiana; Monroe, MI; Ann Arbor, MI; Detroit, MI; Ypsilanti, MI; Toledo, OH; and Columbus, OH.

The Gary Chapter of Universal Health Aid successfully organized its second annual free medical screening on June 22nd, 2019. Gary, Indiana became an interest for the organization especially with the poor logistics it presented. Poverty was represented as one of the highest compared to the other chapters. This made it difficult for the citizens of Gary, Indiana to obtain healthcare. The team decided to explore local Free Health Clinics in hopes that they would provide the answer. The Free Health Clinics, however, still required a co-pay as well as not much leeway of seeing different physicians. After realizing that Gary was in need of this event, the team lead their first successful Health Event last year. The program not only helped to provide preventative medicine, but also provide leadership opportunities and health education. Due to the scale of the event, the chapter centralized majority of their time to the annual event.

The event included seeking sponsorships, doctor recruitments, nurse recruitments, volunteer recruitments, and advertising. The volunteers were all put through two days of training, in which they learned hands on of their duties, HIPPA regulations, event coordination, and expectations.

Such advancements should help Gary in terms of the uninsured citizens, estimated to be at 18.1% of people under age 65 in the township of Gary. As mentioned earlier, a vast number of citizens do not have insurance so they resort to free health clinics. Lacking insurance can be quite problematic for this population as this increases the difficulty of seeing the appropriate health provider to diagnose immediate or chronic health issues. The free health clinics were explored and presented some drawbacks that were resolved via our program, however, this event and a free health clinic are incomparable. This event provides with a variety of physicians from renown hospitals volunteering their precious time as well as a nurse’s team in order to provide accurate vitals. The health event also provided free snacks and drinks as well as a lunch for free.

The team will continue further with more programs. We thank all members of the UHA team who helped to run this free medical Screening. You made it such a success.
